Harnessing AI for Safe Trade in Latin America and the Caribbean: Innovations for SPS Transformation

24-26 November 2025

Programme: here

In a rapidly digitizing world, artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way institutions and businesses work, streamlining processes, improving efficiency and unlocking new opportunities. Within the sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) arena, AI offers potential to transform how government authorities detect, and control risks related to food safety, animal and plant health that affect cross-border trade, implement and enforce regulations, and cooperate with the private sector to apply risk-based systems and practices that facilitate safe trade.

In line with its 2025–2030 Strategy Facilitating Safe Trade to Meet the Global Goals, the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) is jointly organizing this regional event with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to profile and learn about practical experiences with the use of digitalization and AI to modernize and improve SPS systems that facilitates cross-border trade.

This event will:

  • Highlight practical experiences with the use of innovative SPS solutions using digital and AI tools across Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Foster dialogue and knowledge exchange on SPS innovations and scaling opportunities.

The event is expected to result in new learning about the results and challenges of using AI to deliver food safety, animal and plant health processes and systems that facilitate safe trade based on international standards (Codex, IPPC, WOAH). It is also expected to inform the development of new collaborative projects that harness the potential of digitalization and AI for improved SPS outcomes.

Participants will include SPS regulators from across IICA’s 34 member states, alongside representatives of regional SPS institutions, the private sector, STDF partners and donors, academia and other relevant stakeholders.
